Just something to think about. . .
Our family has changed its eating (and purchasing) habits a lot in the last two years. I've embraced the idea of "whole foods", and books like The Maker's Diet and Nourishing Traditions have led us to reconsider the way we eat. Mostly, I have felt nudged by the Holy Spirit to read the Bible again (passages like those in Leviticus that I may skip over for several years!). I am brought back to this:
1) God is who He says He is.
2) I can trust His word to be true. (Because of #1)
Looking at some of the laws He gave to His people is just amazing (I'm thinking of things like purification laws that the other surrounding nations did not practice). He protected and prospered His chosen people through the LAW. He knew best. And He still does. Although Christ's coming changed many things, I am still under the impression that other things, such as avoiding pork and washing hands, are still good for us, though perhaps unnecessary.
All this so that I can post this interesting article:

(Apologies! I've given up on making a link until Braden is home to help me!)
This family thinks a lot the way I do. I find it interesting and encouraging. I hope you do, too.

I have really enjoyed both of the books that you have mentioned. I can't wait to get back to preparing food the way I should be.
A few things from Nourishing Traditions that I adopted were making homemade sour cream and homemade cream cheese. These are both totally simple recipes and so much better than the store bought stuff. I have recently come across a recipe for homemade yogurt in the crockpot. This sounds so simple and it makes alot.
Are you finding it hard to eat the way you want to with the busyness of your life right now? We have definitely had too much junk in the past few months but it's much better than it was when I was pregnant with the other three.
Do share your good recipes!
Do you buy raw milk, organic, or other? We switched to organic, but I'm not satisfied yet.
Church family have blessed us with many meals, for which I am SO grateful (especially since my kitchen is not in order!). I make sure we have a HUGE salad with everything. For now, that is enough. Everthing has to be simple right now, but we can still do simply healthy! I miss making all the extras- muffins, granola, breads, hummus, etc. That, too, will come.
Hi Calli,
The sour cream is actually called creme fresh in Nourishing Traditions. All you do is pour 1 pint of cream (make sure it is not ultra pasturized it can be raw but that is $10.00 a pint which is crazy) in a jar. Add 1 tablespoon of buttermilk or creme fresh from a previous batch. Close lid tight and set on top of fridge for 24 hours (less if it is hot out). stir and check the taste after 24 hours or earlier if you want. It will be thick and taste like a mild sour cream. It is sooooo yummy and soooo simple. I have only messed up one batch when I left it too long in hot weather.
The cream cheese is also in Nourishing traditions. I'll let you read about it there but it pretty much consists of straining whole yogurt for several hours. It is more sour than store bought cream cheese but you get used to it. My family really likes it.
The yogurt in the crockpot recipe was recently on the cooking board at Titus2.com. I will let you know how it turns out once I get a chance to try it.
I was buying raw milk for a few months while I was pregnant but it kept turning sour too quick and we waisted too much money by not using it. I think that it is not popular enough for the store I shop at to be super fresh. I do buy organic whole milk but the kids and I drink mostly rice milk. If you have a Trader Joes they sell a non-homogenized organic milk. You just have to strain the cream off when you pour it.
We are getting back to healthier eating a little at a time. For the most part we have stopped eating out. We are trying to go the whole month without eating out but I doubt that will happen with me being on the mend. We are still being blessed with meals and I am so grateful.
